Week 5

Week 5 - 4/29/14

During this week the group divided up tasks and continued work on the various elements of the project. I continued working on the Rules and Chance cards. I began to narrow the chance cards to the ones that we wanted to keep after coming up with a variety of ideas and for the rules I add new ones as they pop up. Raphael continued to work on designs for the physical needs and chances, today he finished all work on the needs cards and moved on to other designs for the project. Morgan has continued work on the game board and assisted in writing rules and getting rid of excess chance cards that were no longer wanted or needed. Lastly David worked on finding and modeling the 3D animals to be printed.

Week 4

In week 4 the development of the pieces of the game has started. The game cards, the needs and change cards are being designed with Abode Photoshop CC and Microsoft Publisher 2013. Each sheet has 18 of the cards on and each card has art of the need item is represents. The cards would be printed on card-stock back and front and cut using a paper cutter. The game pieces of the animals and the player pieces are being 3-D printed in very fine detail. The game board will be made one of two ways, either ordering a custom board offline from a site Game Craftier or getting a poster print-out of the layout of the board and attaching it to a older game board.

The images shown the the first drafts of what the game cards will look like. Each page will be printed front and back of the same page.

Week 3

Week 3 - 4/17/2014

During week 3, we continued to work vigorously on the Project Proposal. We also discussed various ideas as to how improve the game, along with how the pieces to the game and the board would be created. It was decided that the game board design would be created using AutoCad 2014 by one of the group members. We agreed that we were going to take full advantage of the intricate 3D printer that we have access to, in order to create the player pieces and the animal figure pieces. Professor Noh went to each of the groups today to hear our proposals for the toy that we are planning to design. When he visited our group, we explained the design proposal and answered any questions that he had. Professor Noh also brought in his three children, who went to all of the groups and listened to their ideas for a toy and the toys objectives. Two members of our group pitched the idea of the board game “Pet Pal Adventure” to the kids. The kids then evaluated the toy on a sheet of paper which was given to the instructor. As far as we could tell, the kids seemed to take to the idea of Pet Pal Adventure pretty well. Posted here is the preliminary Autocad drawing of the game board.

Week 2 - Initial Toy Design Proposal Page

Week 2 - 4/8/14

After a lot of brainstorming the group members finally agreed that designing a board game would be the best decision. The initial design for the board game is shown below in the center of the paper. Other important concepts to the game were written in along the top, sides, and bottom of the paper. The game is described in the "objective" section, and how the game is played is shown under the "rules" section. The group also discussed and agreed on a target age, target price, and the number of players for the game. The proposed title of the game is Pet Pal Adventure. In order to create a successful board game, group members also discussed the contents of the game. The proposed player pieces are listed underneath the "pieces" area on the page. It was also decided that "needs" cards would be used similar to the way money is used in Monopoly. Animal pieces will also be created for players to try to own. The group came up with 12 common American household pets, which are shown below the "animals" section in the top left hand corner of the page.

NOTE: Everything listed in the above text and shown in the picture below are subject to change as the group attempts to improve the board game.

Week 1

Week 1 - April 1st 2014

During this week,  the group was formed and we proposed a variety of ideas for what we could do for the toy. The ideas included a variant of the classic ball in cup game, but in this edition instead of having the cup held in your hand it would be mounted to safety glasses and the game would have you trying to get the ball in the cup without using your hands. Another  proposed idea was making a Risk like strategy game with five competing factions and the goal would be to defeat the opponents. A third proposed idea was a game where you build different structures with different properties like water and other such hazards interfering.  The last idea we had was to make a children's board game with the goal to collect as many pets as possible. In the next few weeks we will be narrowing down these ideas to the one we want to use for the project.
